Infinite Sammies

I miss having a dog. Every once in awhile I catch myself poking around on breeders’ websites, until I’m reminded by a sensible little voice (and a demanding little parrot) that now just isn’t the time. My first childhood dog was half samoyed, and he was always the saddest, mopiest-looking old boy, but full-blooded sammies are big, happy, fluffy teddy bears. I love ‘em.

Griffins

I spent Sunday at my parents’ place (it’s tradition for me to be the one to wrestle with the tangle of Christmas lights, and I still drop by the first weekend every December to light the tree). The rain didn’t let up once all day, so in between decorating, my neice and I passed the time playing video games or messing around with my tablet. She asked me how long griffins had been extinct.

Ocho Cinco

My brother has the most ridiculous dog — a Boston terrier/pug mix (‘bug’) with a crooked tail that answers to Ocho. His tongue is literally too large to fit inside of his mouth, and tends to get coated in dirt, leaves, hair, or whatever else he’s been rooting in. He’ll eat anything small enough to swallow, no matter how inedible (he’d probably nosh a box of thumb tacks if you’d let him), and he has some of the worst flatulence of any animal I’ve met outside of a barnyard. My brother likes to joke that the breeder ripped him off.

But despite all of this, he really is the sweetest dog ever. How could you not love that face?

With Sunday as grey, drab and drizzly as it was, I really didn’t feel like leaving the apartment. Instead, I queued up a few favourite movies and spent the afternoon noodling around on my tablet.

Lammergriffin

Another griffin. African species this time — Lammergeier meets “King” Cheetah. She’s considerably more athletic looking than my Canadian species. This one’s a workup of one of my Sketchuary sketches.

Owlcat Griffin

I’d expect a Canadian griffin to look a little more northerly than the traditional beast. Balancing six limbs on a quadruped takes a bit of fiddling to make it convincing. Whoever began the trend of sticking wings on mythological critters apparently didn’t consider the awkwardness of sporting two sets of shoulder blades.

Being built something like a bulldog, I’m not sure how well he’d get off the ground. Maybe those wings are just for show.

Starstuff Pondering

I started this little project over a year ago, and it’s sat on my hard drive, largely unfinished, for most of that period. The approach of the 2nd annual Carl Sagan Day seemed a fitting deadline as incentive to actually get it completed (the narrative being inspired by the late astronomer’s frequent musings on starstuff and our connection to the Universe). I need to set deadlines for myself more often. I might actually get things done.

There are a number of scientific truths that I find exceedingly profound, and somewhere near the top of that list is the notion that the Earth and everything on it, including human beings, was created from the ash of forgotten stars.

Quickie drawing of Brendan and Pangur Ban from The Secret of Kells. I adore this film. The DVD release is tomorrow, and if you haven’t seen it already, I strongly urge you to check it out. A unique story, beautiful soundtrack and some of the most gorgeous animation I’ve ever seen — as if the characters had leapt off of the illuminated pages of the famed Book of Kells itself. Go watch it.
